The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the complex joint responsible for your daily actions, such as speaking and eating. When the TMJ malfunctions, it leads to the debilitating condition known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
What Is TMD?
TMD is a group of conditions that trigger pain and discomfort in the TMJ, which is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull.
Symptoms of TMD
- Pain in the jaw, face, neck, or around the ear
- Limited jaw movement
- Locking of the jaw
- Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw when opening or closing the mouth
- Discomfort when biting or chewing
- Ringing in the ears, ear pain, or hearing issues
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Headaches or migraines
- Dizziness or balance issues
Common Causes of TMD
Chronic Stress
Stress can lead to teeth clenching or grinding, which puts excessive pressure on the TMJ. If left untreated, this condition can trigger pain and discomfort in the jaw, face, and neck.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis of the TMJ causes joint pain and inflammation, leading to TMD.
Disordered Jaw Growth
Congenital problems with jaw development, including a small jaw or asymmetrical jaw, can lead to TMD.
Injury
Sustaining a severe blow to the jaw, face, or head can lead to TMD when the impact causes damage to the TMJ and surrounding structures.
Misaligned Bite
A misaligned bite or malocclusion, including an underbite or overbite, can cause TMD as it causes the jaw to work inefficiently and put stress on the TMJ.
Treatment Options
- Pain medication
- Physical therapy
- Bite splints or mouthguards
- Surgery
- Stress management
Botox Therapy
Botox can help relax the muscles in your jaw, which in turn can greatly improve facial discomfort. Everyone is different, so we will determine the number of units you’ll benefit from the most. Depending on where your affected areas are, Botox will be placed in facial muscles, like your forehead, temple, and/or jaw muscles. Most of our patients report very little discomfort. A cold ice pack after treatment will help with minor discomfort. Your treatment results will last about 3-6 months.
PBM (Photo Biomodulation) Therapy
PBM is a pain management therapy that is performed with a low-level laser. PBM is light energy that is absorbed at a cellular level, improving circulation, oxygenation, and enzyme activity.
